Welcome to CIAT

California Institute of Automotive Technology (CIAT)

Hello, my name is Aaron Trahan and I am the Student Coordinator for CIAT.

We are a Smog Tech School that has been in business, since about the beginning of the Smog Industry in California. We also sell technical manuals all across California to other schools that teach the Smog Program.

You might ask "What is a Smog Tech School? "

The answer is, we teach people to become Smog Technicians. Student take our classes at night 6-10pm and after passing all the requirements take the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) exam(s). If they pass they are Smog Techs. We also help Smog Technicians renew their Smog Licenses.

You might next ask "What does a Smog Technician do?"

The answer is, Smog Technicians perform Smog Tests on vehicles to make sure they pass emissions standards for California. If the vehicle does not pass a Test and Repair shop has a Licensed Repair Technician fix the vehicle. By fixing the polluting vehicles CA has been able to reduce the amount of Smog in the air and improved the overall air quality that everyone breathes everyday.

Why would anyone want to become a Smog Tech?

The answer is, to learn a technical craft that is in demand. On average a newly Licensed Smog Tech earns about $15/hr. As long as there are vehicles that are polluting the air there will be a need for Smog Techs.  Diesel vehicles have been smogged for a while now and now we are smogging Hybrid vehicles.

Thank you for reading.
